Conservation & Restoration
The techniques and materials we use
are designed to preserve and protect your artwork. We often see artwork that
has been improperly framed with acidic materials or inappropriate adhesives
which cause damage especially to artworks on paper. We work closely with one of
the foremost paper conservators in New Jersey. We offer evaluations and
estimates on canvas and paper conservation at no cost to our clients, and if
you choose to proceed with conservation work you can be assured it is performed
by experienced and exceptional conservators.
The Gilt Complex also restores, re-gilds, and refinishes damaged antique
and period frames.
Signs of artworks on paper in need of conservation:
Foxing: This term
refers to small spots (often brown in color) across the surface of the artwork
and is a result of acidic build-up.
Deteriorated Adhesives: In appropriate adhesives and tapes can cause severe damage, as they contain active chemistry which continues to deteriorate paper. These adhesives often harden and become brittle, turning orange/brown in color, and causing the artwork to do the same.
Installation
Proper installation of your artwork
is essential, as it affects the viewing experience of your art. Whether you're
hanging small or large pieces, placement and well proportioned spacing can
affect viewing greatly. We have years of experience at art installation, and
have worked in a variety of galleries and living spaces. Upon request we will visit your installation
site and provide you with an estimate.
